Christmas of 1964 Lorna May was young girl of 8 living in Calgary , Alberta. Her Mom and Dad were not rich by any means and at Christmas it was traditional for her parents to only give one important gift. Oh, how she cherished that gift. That particular Christmas of 1964, Lorna May wanted, no she desired, no she yearned a gift like no other, and that was a Barbie doll. She did have dolls that resembled Barbie dolls but they were just mere imposters, and Lorna May knew that her parents could not afford to buy the real thing. Each year, Lorna’s Dad carefully wrapped that special gift and placed it under the Christmas tree. That young child of 8 was allowed to lift, shake, smell that particular gift, all along hoping and wishing in anticipation.
Crack of dawn, Christmas morning of 1964, the family gathered around the tree, that eager 8 year old was handed that special gift and hurriedly tore off the wrapping paper. To her surprise, possibly even horror, there before this sweet child (only an 8 year old is sweet, not Lorna in her present form) was a Barbie head and 3 wigs. The thoughts going through her head were maybe that this was some mistake and that Barbies body was possibly in another box. Lorna May’s Mom, quickly assured her that she could use the Barbie head on the ‘other’ doll and that it would be like having a real Barbie and that no, there was no Barbie body. As Lorna reminisces and shares this story with family and friends today, they all think she’s a tad crazy and that she made up this memory, funny thing is, she still has that Barbie head.
Merry Christmas, may all your dreams come true, or in this case partially true.
Until next time
